A note from writer & co-director Jake Morgan-Scharhon:

When I got the idea for the film Top it was the middle of the pandemic. I was recovering from top surgery and was watching a lot of films. I felt isolated, partly because of the pandemic, but also in large part because my friends and family didn’t seem to understand what I was going through. We don’t have a cultural space for top surgery and recovery. As I was watching film after film I began searching for one that spoke to the experience I was going through. I could not find one narrative feature film that centered a transgender man and his experience with top surgery. I decided to write one with the hope it would help others to feel less alone and to invite others in to the experience. The film Top follows Matt through his top surgery journey as well as memories and relationships throughout his life. Not only did I want to convey the top surgery experience, but also a vision of a whole person and a whole life. As I was writing the feature film screenplay of Top I received the Lillian Miller Foundation Fellowship for Trans and Indigiqueer Artists through Artist Trust. I decided to put the funds toward making a short film based on the feature. The short will be submitted to festivals and serve as proof of concept for the feature film.
